Procrastination : Why You Do It, What to Do About It NOW

Welcome!

Our book is intended to help those who struggle with procrastination and to aid those who live or work with someone whose procrastination is creating problems.

We know that more and more people are suffering significant consequences of procrastination.

Current estimates are that one in four adults reports being a chronic procrastinator. (Are you procrastinating right now?)

Examples of external consequences

  • losing a job or promotion
  • poor performance reviews or grades
  • all-nighters at work or in school
  • paying late fees, tax problems
  • problems in relationships

Examples of internal consequences
  • low self-confidence
  • self-blame
  • anxiety, guilt, dread
  • stress-related health problems

Even though procrastinators know that there may well be significant consequences, it’s not easy to stop procrastinating. Taking action is often harder than you expect!

We think that’s because procrastination is not a simple matter of time-management or self-discipline but a complex psychological and/or neurocognitive issue.

We suggest that procrastination is a strategy people use to manage other issues. Those issues may be:

  • psychological, such as fear of failure, fear of success, fear of feeling controlled, or fear of facing reality.
  • biological, such as attention deficit disorder, executive dysfunction, or depression.
  • social, such as pressures deriving from family dynamics or cultural changes.

We devote the first half of our book to helping you explore and understand what the underlying issues may be for you. We believe that this in-depth exploration is part of our unique contribution to working with procrastinators.

In the second half of our book, we give many suggestions, designed specifically for procrastinators, which will help you take action to overcome procrastination.

These techniques work, but only if you use them.

If you don’t understand why you are procrastinating, you may not be free to put our ( or any other ) suggested techniques into practice.

Yet understanding alone doesn’t finish a project. You also have to take action in order to stop procrastinating.

That’s why our book is: PROCRASTINATION: Why You Do It, What To Do About It Now.
